Plot Arc Introduction + Some Game Notes

Magisteria Mini-Arc #1: High Rise Expo

In the late spring and early summer months, an annual event is held in the Business District of Magisteria. Named simply after the district itself, High Rise Expo is a time when the movers and shakers, the district's elite, congregate to both witness and show off the successes of the city, especially with regards to the latest and greatest technological innovations. It's a chance for Otherworlders to pursue all kinds of vocational opportunities and rub elbows with people who may just call some of the shots and may just have some of the answers ... perhaps to questions Otherworlders themselves haven't even thought to ask yet, at that.

High Rise Expo will feature techno-magical challenges involving the magisteria, potentially even related to creating new powers together. The challenges will range in nature from exhilarating to potentially disconcerting or even dangerous, but one thing is for sure: Otherworlders will be expected to demonstrate their innovation, spirit, and determination in what is guaranteed to be an intense arena. Whether the rewards come in the form of esteem and credit, financial gain, or maybe even more special and unique things, you can't access them without hard work and dedication!

Ready to prove yourselves, Otherworlders?

As it is focused on new innovations, High Rise Expo is a generally tech-forward gathering; however, magic users will be in attendance, including NPCs with connections to the elusive leader of the Order of Mysterium, and the challenges will have opportunities for magic and tech to be used together via Synthesis.

Of course, the Expo is still a few months off... which means Otherworlders will need to get some training in Magisteria's particular forms of technology and magic if they're to succeed in the arena of proving one's self. Fortunately, there are those in the city who are happy to help with that. Early events will be focused on training.

But there is one more little thing...

In the days leading up to such a prominent gathering of individuals, the city can sometimes stir with a bit of activity: rumors, gossip, unrest, things brewing beneath the surface, if you will. This year, especially, there's a tension in the air, a sort of simmering: the natives keep insisting that no one has hacked the infrastructure of Magisteria in a century or more, that it's far too advanced for any such machination. Surely we're all completely secure, right? Surely. And yet.

Sometimes it may feel like the arrival of the Otherworlders has attracted the attention of someone or something besides just the friendly natives of the apartments and light rail station ...

Mod notes:

Glad everyone liked the welcoming gifts! I just want to put a quick note here that, over the course of this week, I hope to get the following pages up: The Story So Far, NPCs, and possibly flora/fauna will all be going up! They'll be smol at first, naturally, but definitely won't be staying that way.

I do also want to address something: I will probably try to create another (simpler, less structurally complex, lol) gaming challenge in the form of a quest prompt or something to kind of make up for the TDM challenge, since that involved prizes, and it ended up not really taking off -- which I think is on me for making it rather complicated with the RNG. It was experimental and, I think, maybe a bit much for a first TDM. Next time, I'm going to do all lighter prompts, which is my general mileage with a TDM anyway. Something for a network sample will also be on the next TDM. I'm still experimenting a bit to see what folks go for with the prompts!

Speaking of the TDM, I'm heavily inclining towards the first event doubling as a potential TDM. New players can tag in as "new players," but it gives us a chance to keep people rolling in. I also want to have another public app round in April, sometime after the event. Which brings me to my last note: I have been floating April 3rd as the possible event date, but on consideration, I am pushing it to April 8th to give myself one more weekend, as I do a lot of my writing work for the game over weekends, and I want to give myself time to produce a very solid event. I will be updating the calendar to move event plotting to April 3rd instead.

As a sneak preview, the game's first event will feature:

+ the Neon Nest, a high-rise aviary of cybernetic birds
+ the Ember Hearth, a tame magical miniature volcano surrounded by a garden of blooming fire flowers
+ a revelation as to the mysterious figure who leads The Council for Technological Advancement
+ clues for some of the things hinted at above -- the early ~Conflicts
+ the grand central library of Magisteria, and the being who oversees it -- rumored to be as old as time itself -- a keeper of the tomes known only as the Librarian

This event will be a two-parter, as Otherworlders will travel to four special tech locations and four special magic locations and engage with them in various ways to unlock hidden clues and abilities. We are going to be diving right into the plot!
